Augusta GA Happenings: Week of 6/8/14

Hello friends! I feel like I haven’t posted in forever. I’m sorry my regular posting schedule got off track last week. I’ve had a sinus infection for the past week that I just can’t kick, and both the kids were sick as well! I will be spending this weekend sanitizing my house. Hopefully we are all on the mend and regular posting can resume!

Abbey Bethmann Photography

I never had newborn pictures made with my first child and I always regretted it. When I discovered I was pregnant with my second, I immediately began planning for his first photo session. Time goes so fast when you have a baby, and I wanted to document those precious weeks when my baby was tiny and new.

I asked a few friends on Facebook if they could recommend a newborn photographer. One name that kept coming up over and over again was Abbey Bethmann Photography.

10357981_10102191493890565_807250687_n
Abbey is, first and foremost, a mother. She’s raising two precious boys of her own. I’ve been able to spend time with Abbey and her kids and I can tell you she has the patience of a saint. During a play date at her house, I saw her act with endless compassion and kindness. Crumbs on the floor from kids eating cookies? No big deal. Mom stressed out over a fussy baby? Abbey took him and rocked him to sleep. Abbey displays that same kindness and patience during photography sessions. Have no worry about your child feeling shy or fussy – Abbey will work with you until you have the perfect shot!

Augusta Activity: Strawberry Picking

On Monday we ventured to North Augusta to go strawberry picking with our Mom’s Club. It was a blast! If you are looking for something fun to do with your kids, you should definitely consider going strawberry picking.

We visited Gurosik’s Berry Plantation which is located at 345 Briggs Road in North Augusta, SC. I live in Grovetown and it was about a 35 minute drive for me.

056

(I had planned to get some great pictures to share but my son would not cooperate that day. I’m sure you all know how it is.)

When we arrived, we checked in at the Market, which is the red building located on the left side of the road. I’d recommend parking there – if you park on the right side (where the strawberry fields are located) you’ll have to walk to the Market to pay and get your bucket. We were greeted by a guide who took time to explain how to pick strawberries to the kids. She showed the children flowers (which would become strawberries), green strawberries (not ready to eat), red and green strawberries (still not ready to eat), and red strawberries (ready to eat!). I really enjoyed that they took the time to explain that to the kids – I was able to let my 4 year old pick with supervision because he understood he should only pick the red strawberries.

We were given a pint size container to hold our strawberries and escorted over to the fields. My son had a blast filling up his container! Of course he also sampled a few berries.

PicMonkey Collage4

After we picked our strawberries, we headed to the pond to feed the catfish.

057

They also raise honey bees, and we were given an opportunity to view the hive and hear a little about honey bees.

After we took a look at the honey bees, we headed back to the Market to sample some strawberry slush. Our group also chatted and let the kids eat some snacks under the covered picnic area. I’d recommend bringing a cooler and some snacks – there isn’t a water fountain if you need a drink.

The Market sells other fruits and veggies, such as asparagus, corn, lettuce, watermelon, cantaloupe, etc. I picked up a blueberry fritter to enjoy for breakfast, and it was delicious! You can also pick up pre-picked pints and buckets of strawberries at the Market.

The cost for the tour and picking was $7.00, and that includes a pint of strawberries. You will pay more to pick a bucket. I believe that was $11.50 but I haven’t been able to get anyone to answer the phone to verify the cost.

We will definitely be going back as a family before strawberry season ends! FYI, strawberry season runs April – June.

Hours:

  • Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

I purchased a bucket of strawberries and will be making a Millionaire Pie.

Happenings, Week of May 4th 2014

One of the posts I’ll be doing each week is a “Happenings” posts which will give a quick run down of some upcoming events in the Augusta area. If you are a reader who is not from this area, please don’t let this dissuade you from reading! I will have lots of content that isn’t Augusta centric.

Typically this post will go up on Sundays but there are some events happening on this weekend that I wanted you to know about, so just for this week you will see it on Saturday.

Bare with me as this particular section of the blog grows. I can’t announce every single event in the area because I may not know of them or I may not think they would be of interest to my readers – but I will try! If you know of something happening that you don’t see on the list, shoot me an email at andrea@tickledpeach.com or leave me a comment.

*** Rearding the Lowe’s Build & Grow: This is a bi-monthly workshop that Lowe’s hosts for children. They supply the tools and the materials, and at each workshop you build something different. At this particular workshop, the children will be building a flower delivery truck. Your child will also receive an apron and a badge for each workshop they attend. You must register HERE (you can register for whatever Lowe’s is closest to you). I would say this would be best for children 3+.
